EUMETSAT

Benefits of EUMETSAT data and products for public administrations
14 May 2008

EUMETSAT is more than a one-stop-shop for space-based meteorological observation over Europe. EUMETSAT data covers activities in many different fields, starting with operational meteorology, but extending to operational oceanography, atmosphere and climate change monitoring.

The data and products from its real-time and archive services cover the whole globe. They reach out to many interest areas of public administrations. However, in many of the maps, statistical analyses or reports arriving on the desk of public administrations the use of these data and products may not be obvious at first sight.

The presentation sets out with putting EUMETSAT in the context of a space-based global observational network.  It briefly touches on some technicalities of satellite measurements illustrating the limits and huge potential of space-based observations. The main part shows a selection of EUMETSAT products together with societal and economical benefit areas where they already are or might be applied.

The examples used in the presentation are mainly of image type. They also illustrate the resolution in time and space (e.g. images every 15 minutes), as well as the multitude of parameters (e.g. thunderstorm threat or available solar irradiation) transmitted through EUMETSAT’s real-time service EUMETCast or offered by EUMETSAT’s on-line archive.
