INVITATION

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

Climate change is arguably the greatest challenge facing humankind in the twentyfirst century and it is indeed high on the European political agenda. Yet uncertainty in climate predictions is the critical element in IPCC considerations of mitigation and adaptation strategies to cope with changing climate.

It has been shown that the major element of uncertainty in predictions up to 30 years into the future is the lack of adequate information on initial conditions – i.e. lack of quality observations. The primary need to reduce the uncertainty in climate predictions over this period is for more abundant and better observations, many of which are derived from satellite observations. These are the Essential Climate Variables.

Under the overall coordination of the Committee for Earth Observation Satellites, the European Space Agency is playing a leading role in answering the needs defined by the Global Climate Observing System and in making best use of the Earth Observation archives available in Europe.

I would like to invite you to attend a round-table organised by the Agency at the eve of the conference “Bridging the Gap”, organised by the Environmental Agency of the Republic of Slovenia, to be held on May 13th at 17:30 in Portorož, Slovenia.
